When you contextualize it within the mind frame of a fighting game continuing to change its competitive meta with balance patches and new characters, a game like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PuBG) having tournaments worth hundreds of thousands of dollars isn't too extreme. Hopefully, we'll get to see a bit more European players represent in Cologne, but having North American players try to take their throne might be an interesting dynamic.

"All three crates will contain items inspired by the Battle Royale movie, some of which you may have seen in our older artworks", Brendan "PLAYERUNKNOWN" Greene announced.

The third crate is the gamescom Invitational Crate, and it features five distinct and unique outfits or more variety.

Interactive coverage for the The Gamescom PUBG Invitational will be provided on social media and select gamescom attendees will have the opportunity to join the tournament on the spot. Like the cosmetic crates that are already available in-game, these new crates will be purchased with the Battle Points players earn by participating in matches.

As for how this relates to the aforementioned crate and key testing, Bluehole adds: "We have implemented a very basic key and crate system for this test". Although both the Wanderer Crate and Survivor Crate are free to open, the Invitational Crate will cost you $2.50 to open. Alternatively, they can use their Battle Points.

The full system for purchasing in-game skins won't be available until the game is out of early access, but this is just the start. We will then return to the free-to-open system.

Starting August 3, PUBG will be able to purchase vanity items for the game, and the the proceeds will be used as prizing for winners and for charities selected by Bluehole. All of the items from these three creates will be tradeable on the Steam marketplace going forward, though.
