49ers notes: Shanahan fears Malcolm Smith injury is long term

Smith is expected to undergo an MRI, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has already said that it could be a long-term injury. "He's going to get it checked out now, and I'll have more for you later".

Garnett has primarily played at left guard with the first-team unit during training camp. Zane Beadles filled in for him with the first-string defense Saturday.

Maiocco added that "Smith's condition is likely to open the door for rookie linebacker Reuben Foster to move into the starting lineup at the weak-side linebacker position".

Also listed on the injury report was linebacker Malcolm Smith.

Free agent acquisition Malcolm Smith left Saturday's practice early and as Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area noted, "the team fears Smith may have sustained an injury to his pectoral that could place his season in jeopardy".

It's possible this injury winds up being more serious, meaning the veteran linebacker could be out for an extended period of time. Reuben Foster, the 49ers second first-round pick of the 2017 draft, has had no shortage of splash plays, snagging four interceptions so far and drawing positive reviews from general manager John Lynch.

For now, one can only hope these two injuries aren't too serious and both players are back in action before too long. The 49ers probably wanted to ease Foster into a starting role as the season progressed, but they may not have that luxury anymore.
