Colorado's wind power soars; state ranks in the top 10

Now that the cost of wind has become more affordable DOE’s reports show wind power is the leading source of renewable energy capacity in the U.S

Wind energy's growth - at least in the next few years - is showing few signs of slowing down, with 142,000 megawatts of new and proposed wind capacity lined up to connect to the nation's electric power grid, according to new data released by the Department of Energy.

The offshore market report reviews the latest information on the offshore wind market, technology and cost trends in the US and worldwide. Wind supplied about 6 percent of US electricity, and 14 states now get more than 10 percent of their electricity from wind. "Expectations for continued low natural gas prices, modest electricity demand growth, and lower near-term demand from state [renewables portfolio standard] policies also put a damper on growth expectations, as do inadequate transmission infrastructure and competition from solar energy in certain regions of the country".

NY wants 50 percent of the state's energy to come from renewable sources by 2030.

Recent U.S. offshore lease activities have attracted a diverse group of industry participants, including DONG Energy, Statoil, and Avangrid Renewables.

The two primary factors driving down the cost of wind energy are reduced wind plant costs and higher productivity. Some large wind projects that could supply MA are in Maine. Longer blades in particular helped to boost new wind turbine performance, with wind projects built in 2014 and 2015 reporting a 42.5 percent average capacity factor in 2016, compared to a 32.1 percent capacity factor for projects built between 2004 and 2011.

"The wind industry continues to install significant amounts of new capacity, and supplied about 6 percent of total USA electricity in 2016", Daniel Simmons, DOE acting assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy, said in a statement.

As wind power grows, so does the American workforce. In 2016, wind supplied about 6 percent of USA electricity.

Offshore wind has arrived in the U.S. Over the past decade, though, wind turbine prices have dropped substantially.

Although smaller than offshore projects in other countries, it marks a historic moment in the USA offshore wind industry and has helped accelerate interest in the US offshore wind market.

The US has more than 20 offshore wind projects in the pipeline with over 24GW of potential installed capacity, according to the Department of Energy (DoE). It's part of an emerging trend toward giant wind farms. When finished it will generate 9 million megawatt hours of wind power. We're excited to follow the progress of the emerging USA offshore wind industry in the years ahead. Wind is the largest source of American renewable energy capacity, supporting over 100,000 across all 50 states, with almost 85,000 MW of installed capacity at the end of the second quarter of 2017. We represent 1,000 member companies and over 100,000 jobs in the USA economy, serving as a powerful voice for how wind works for America.

The global offshore wind industry is developing larger and larger turbines - with a push towards turbines between 6 to 8 MW in deeper waters. Find information about wind energy on the AWEA website. They gather each year at the Western Hemisphere's largest wind power trade show, the AWEA WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition, next in Chicago, May 7-10, 2018.
