All three were arrested between 3.30pm and 6.35pm on Friday after they produced themselves at the state MACC headquarters in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Azam said six MACC officials had also searched Phee's house in Taman Desa Oren, Sungai Puty, Butterworth earlier today.

In a statement, MACC confirmed the arrests, and said the three will be brought to the Georgetown Magistrate court tomorrow to be remanded.

"From what I know, the MACC is in the midst of investigating the letters issued by my client (concerning the factory)".

A candlelight vigil demanding Phee's release will be held outside the MACC HQ at 9.30pm tonight.

Today, MACC officers arrested state Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh, the factory's manager and the factory director to assist investigations into the factory's operations.

Phee was previously arrested for being part of the Voluntary Patrol Squad, or PPS, which was outlawed by the home ministry.

The raid is believed to be in connection to a case of an illegal factory operating in Sungai Lembu, Bukit Mertajam for the past 10 years.

A separate MACC team also went to the Seberang Perai Municipal Council headquarters in Bandar Perda on the same day.

The carbon filter-processing factory has been operating on agricultural land inside an oil palm estate for more than 10 years.

The commission had conducted a joint raid on the factory yesterday, together with officers from the Department of Environment and Immigration Department.

A resident told The Sun the factory had been emitting noxious fumes for the past 15 years without any action taken by the authorities here.
