Inter's refusal to listen to offers below their £48m valuation of their player has prevented any deal from being struck, with Gareth Bale not interested in a move to Old Trafford despite the club's long-standing interest in the Real Madrid star.

After three mediocre seasons by their standards, things seem a lot rosier at Old Trafford.

"Normally the second season should be better than the first, but again, this is modern football".

Liverpool have brought in speedy Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah from AS Roma and Scotland full back Andy Robertson from Hull but have not made the kind of acquisitions that would transform their chances of a first title in the Premier League era. "I think it is the objective of every one of the top teams and every one of the top team managers", he said. Most of all, he hopes that he can repeat what he has done at his previous clubs and win the league in his second season.

"There is no guarantee but naturally a manager in his second season knows the club and the players better".

"We want to win more trophies and do better in the Premier League and we're obviously happy to be back in the Champions League".

"So we are having conversations and we are discussing the possibility of him staying with us for the second part of the season".

I have conditions to deliver a better team than I did in the first season.

"It takes time, I know that from experience of going to United at a young age".

Mourinho led United to victory in the League Cup and Europa League last season, the latter yielding a place in the Champions League, but their football was drab and they finished a distant sixth in the league.

Having ended months of speculation by signing a new two-year contract, Wenger believes if his players put on a united front, the exasperated fans will fall into line behind them.

Mourinho's squad has been boosted by the summer arrivals of defender Victor Lindelof, midfielder Nemanja Matic and striker Romelu Lukaku. Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw remain major injury concerns - and will be back only late this year - but with Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind, left-back shouldn't be a major headache.

While Mourinho has welcomed the new signings, he argues that of greater significance is the fact his team will not have their domestic fixture list disrupted by the Europa League this season. We'll improve the team and try to be at that level, to constantly be improving.

"We have a giant on our chest, which is really heavy, but we don't compare our potential to the biggest clubs in Europe right now".

But having witnessed first-hand just how hard it has been for clubs to conduct business this summer, Mourinho says he will not be complaining if his squad stays as it is come 31 August.

"This time, we are all in the same basket".
