Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud staked a claim for a starting place with the victor in a thrilling season-opening 4-3 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League on Friday.
"At one stage I opened the door for him as I knew I had many strikers, and in the end he made a decision to stay", said Wenger.
Lacazette almost had his second of the night just minutes later, but Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel turned the shot aside, but Giroud beat the Dane with an exquisite header on the ensuing corner to give Arsenal the 4-3 victory.
The two sides went into the break level as Danny Welbeck scored on the stroke of half-time with a neat finish.
Arsenal opened the scoring in the second minute but the Foxes hit back to lead 2-1 and then 3-2 before the Gunners' spectacular comeback in the closing minutes.
The Frenchman and fellow substitute Aaron Ramsay scored in the final seven minutes as Arsenal twice came from behind, the Welshman levelling two minutes before Giroud headed the decider.
"Going forward and character wise we have been great".

"Even when I played Giroud through the middle and him on the left he did very well on the left".
"It's impossible to keep them happy when strikers don't play". He is a fantastic guy who loves the club. In the end he chose to stay and it was one of the great days of recent weeks for me.
"We lost the openers in my first and second years at Arsenal so now we were third time lucky".
"The first goal was from a short corner and we were not focused enough".
"I don't know how good everyone will be".
"We wanted to do that today - unfortunately that didn't happen and it's something where we can look back and analyse the game and see where we went wrong and improve on the situation".
Now with a freaky back four of (from right to left) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal, Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin, Arsenal pushed for an equaliser, and on 83 minutes it came.
