Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal's form suffered because of his uncertainty last season

Pushed on whether he thought Giroud could leave before the transfer window closes on August 31, Wenger replied: "No".

"I love the man and the player", said Wenger.

The Gunners had won just one of their last seven opening-day fixtures and looked destined to start another campaign slowly as the 2015/16 champions took the lead twice, only to lose 4-3 at the Emirates Stadium.

"I rate him as a player but we have similar types with Alex Iwobi, Jack Wilshere back, Mesut Ozil - we have plenty of the same type of players".

It may just be me getting the wrong idea, but when I hear him talk about an exceptional player I instantly think of a creative or attacking one.

"I prefer to be on the pitch as much as I can but I want to help the team reach the targets", he said. "He has a big weight in the squad and it was a relief for me that he chose to stay".

"And you could see that this team has quality and is used to playing together, but [we had] 70 per cent possession with 27 shots on goal".

And so they did, within two minutes. "When a player goes into the final year of their contract we will try to extend the contract because there is no reason we shouldn't do it, but we are not there yet".

Alexandre Lacazette puts his goal-scoring abilities on display in the Premier League for the first time when Arsenal host Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

But Welbeck had the last word of the first half for the home side when he equalised from close range in added time after new signing Sead Kolasinac's tap forward in a goalmouth melee.

But the Gunners boss has also publicly stated he remains confident both Ozil and Sanchez will remain at Arsenal for the upcoming season.

"He came out and made a statement which we are all aware of but while he trains and plays and is professional the way he is, he will be considered for selection".

But Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare also struck a bullish note in his pre-match press conference despite the fact he'll be without the injured Vicente Iborra, Danny Drinkwater and Robert Huth.

The Serie A side have now said they will not increase their offer and Shakespeare is happy to have Mahrez in the team.
