Mattis on Trump's 'fire and fury' remark: 'The rhetoric is up to the President. This is my rhetoric'

On Tuesday, Trump threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" if Pyongyang made any further threats against the United States.

Deviating from the tone of President Trump, who said the US would unleash "fire and fury" upon North Korea, Mattis stressed that the route forward would be diplomatic, and he repeated the importance of the unanimous 15-1 United Nations Security Council vote to impose economic sanctions on North Korea.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Melbourne Radio 3AW: "We would come to the aid of the United States".

South Korea's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong and his USA counterpart H.R. McMaster spoke on the phone for 40 minutes early on Friday, a spokesman for the presidential Blue House in Seoul said.
