Kid's Thrill Town, New License Plate Design Preview set for opening day of Iowa State Fair

After almost 20 years, Iowa's standard license plate will get a new design, and residents can vote on which of three options they like best.

As of Saturday evening, the City and Country plate is in the lead with 83,641 votes and the Fly Our Colors plate is in second with 73,334.

Gov. Kim Reynolds, Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg and Iowa Department of Transportation Director Mark Lowe unveiled the designs, saying they represent the elements of what makes us Iowans. We take pride in our state's natural beauty.

The Iowa DOT is asking Iowans to vote for their favorite design at the Varied Industries Building throughout the fair, which ends August 20.

The designs were created by Iowa DOT graphic artists with input from the governor's office and several state agencies. The winning plate design will be available sometime in 2018. "Specialty" license plates and plates with a collegiate design will not be changed.

The city/country plate selected in 1997 accounts for about 4.2 million of the 4.4 million plates in circulation. The state issues four-point-four million license plates, and the D-O-T says four-point-two million of them are the standard variety plate.
