Ratched will be executive produced by Murphy and original Cuckoo's Nest movie producer Michael Douglas, and the script was written by a newcomer named Evan Romansky who came up with the idea "fresh out of film school". Ratched was played in the movie by Louise Fletcher who won a Best Actress Academy Award for the role, one of five Oscars for Cuckoo's Nest, along with Best Picture, Best Director (Milos Forman), Best Actor (Jack Nicholson) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman). Fox 21 is the studio, producing via Murphy's 20th Century Fox TV overall deal.
Murphy and Douglas are exec producing along with Aleen Keshishian, Margaret Riley, and Jacob Bernstein of Lighthouse Management Media, which manages Romansky.
The origin story begins in 1947 and follows Ratched's journey and evolution from nurse to monster.
Netflix has given the series a two-season, 18 episode commitment. THR indicates that the American Horror Story creator spent a year trying to securing the rights to the character of Nurse Ratched, as well as to the estate of original producer Saul Zaentz, where film rights resided. It will track her murderous progression through the mental health care system. After appearing in a few episodes during that season, Paulson was one of the main characters in the second season - American Horror Story: Asylum - and has continued to be one of the major players in the anthology series.
First Netflix stole Shonda Rhimes from ABC Studios, and now the streaming giant has scored a high-profile drama series from another of TV's most prolific producers. "Ratched" is reportedly set to begin filming after the Hurricane Katrina-focused third season of "American Crime Story". Down the pipeline, Murphy has American Crime Story: Versace and Feud and Pose for FX, and the procedural series 911 for Fox.
This is the latest in a long line of collaborations between Paulson and Murphy.
