Irma damage far greater than expected: Trump

The storm - which has claimed more than two dozen lives in the U.S. - struck southwestern Florida on Sunday morning as a category four hurricane before weakening to a tropical depression on Monday.

The bridge that crosses the river is just north of Gainesville, the state capital and home to the University of Florida.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has said that restoring power to hospitals and nursing homes was a priority.

Most of the stores are closed, there's a gas shortage and millions of homes across the state are still without power.

Police also started evacuating 79 residents of another nursing home in North Miami Beach on Wednesday, citing similar safety concerns about lack of air conditioning.

Three people were found dead at the nursing home and two others died after arriving at the hospital, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief said during a press conference Wednesday.

Police said this morning that this may be related to the loss of power during the storm.

Mr Trump also complimented Florida Governor Rick Scott's response to the crisis, and said he should run for the United States senate. "It was very hot on the second floor". Police say three patients died at the facility and three at a hospital. The nursing home remains without power due to Irma.
