U2 Cancels St. Louis Show Amid Protests

U2 has cancelled a show in St. Louis, Mo., scheduled for Saturday following protests stemming from the acquittal Friday of a former police officer who shot a black man in 2011. He's a pastor at Wayman AME Church in St. Louis.

Police in bulletproof vests and helmets closed in and demanded protesters get off the lawn and out of the street in front of the house.

"We don't want to see property destruction or see people getting hurt", said Elad Gross, a 29-year-old St Louis civil rights attorney, as activists gathered in a park before going to the mall.

St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson wrote, "I am sobered by this outcome".

"Orders to disperse were given numerous times".

The Metropolitan Police Department reports that at least 13 protesters have been arrested and four police officers injured, although police said the protests were mostly non-violent.

On Friday, former local police officer Jason Stockley was found not guilty of murder in the 2011 shooting of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Jason Stockley, 36, who is white, was arrested in May 2016 and charged with first-degree murder, accused of intentionally killing Anthony Lamar Smith and planting a gun in his vehicle.

Jason Stockley has claimed to have seen Anthony Lamar Smith's attempt to seize a gun in his auto, but weapon does not appear on images of onboard camera in police vehicle, nor on those taken by a witness on his mobile phone and by surveillance camera of a nearby restaurant.

"Not saying or doing anything makes you complicit in the brutalization of our friends and neighbors", said Susanna Prins, who carried a "White silence is violence" banner during the protests.

Stockley says he believed smith was armed, but prosecutors claim Stockley planted the gun.

Authorities urged clam during the aftermath as comparisons to the Ferguson protest that gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement in 2014 were drawn.

Earlier in the day, demonstrators staged protests at several suburban shopping malls and another group marched through a popular district of bars and restaurants, The Associated Press reported.
