John Lackey fined Willson Contreras wrongly suspended

Willson Contreras Suspended Two Games by MLB

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras has been suspended two games by Major League Baseball for his actions during Friday's win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Right-hander John Lackey has also been fined, though neither amount has been disclosed.

Contreras is expected to be in the lineup for the Cubs on Saturday while the appeal process plays out.

Both Contreras and Lackey lost their temper with home plate umpire Jordan Baker after he did not call what the Cubs players thought should have been strike three. With the count 2-2 against Carlos Martinez in the top of the fifth inning, Lackey threw a breaking pitch that sailed right over the middle of the plate. Contreras could face a suspension for hitting Baker with his mask after he spiked it following the ejection. After Martinez singled on the next pitch to drive in a run, Lackey ran toward home plate and began screaming at Baker. "Those things don't grow on trees".
