Almost 150 militants, including top commanders Sabzar Bhat, Junaid Mattoo, Ayub Lelhari, Bashir Lashkari, Abu Dujana, Mehmood Gaznavi and Umer Khalid, have been killed by security forces this year, which is the highest in the past eight years. Two IAF Garud personnel, who were part of the operation for training and experience objective, were fatally injured in the exchange of fire.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday said that one of the two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists killed in the Bandipora encounter was involved in several other terror attacks in the area.

Two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists were eliminated in Hajin area of Bandipora district as a result of a cordon and search operation.

He said the two Indian Airforce Garud personnel who were injured in the gunfight with militants later succumbed to their injuries. Two Air Force Garud personnel were also martyred in the action.

Last week, three rebels and an Indian paramilitary personnel were killed in an attack, when the rebels stormed an army camp outside the airport in Srinagar. Forces got a tip off about 2-3 terrorists hiding in the area, militants opened fire on the security forces, triggering a gun battle.

Local sources said that all the shops and business establishments are shut while traffic is also off the roads. The security forces are going after militants as part of Operation Hunt Down and on the basis of a hit list of terrorists.

Sources said the team returned the fire in which two terrorists, identified as Nasrullah Mir alias Anna, a local extremist and a foreign terrorist Ali Bai alias Abu Bakker got killed.
