However, might there be another reason for him to travel to the Lone Star state?

James Franklin responded Friday morning to a report that said Texas A&M meant to make a push to hire the Penn State coach. He led Penn State to the Big Ten title in 2016, a little over four years after the Nittany Lions were levied with devastating NCAA penalties due to the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

If A&M wants to poach Franklin from Penn State, the Aggies would have to pay a $2 million buyout for the Langhorne, Pennsylvania native and pay Sumlin the remainder of his six-year, $30 million dollar contract that he signed in 2013.

Franklin guided the Nittany Lions to the Rose Bowl last season, and he was handsomely rewarded for doing so-in August, he signed a six-year contract extension worth almost $20 million.

If anything, Penn State should be more concerned about Texas A&M making a push for offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead and defensive coordinator Brent Pry, both of whom are expected to see at least a few head coaching offers this coming offseason. However, if he were to leave anytime from 2018 through 2022, he would only owe the university one million.

While there has been some angst at Texas A&M, Sumlin has his program at 4-2 this season, and no comment has been made by the Aggies on his job security. They have since righted the ship and narrowly lost to Alabama last weekend.

"Nothing has changed from the commitment that we made to Coach Franklin and the commitment James made to Penn State just before this season started", the statement said.
