The company says, last year, thousands of holiday positions were transitioned to full-time jobs after the holidays were over.

This holiday season, Amazon is planning to hire more than 120,000 people in various different roles, from customer service to jobs in sortation or fulfillment centers.

"Amazon hiring same number of workers as a year ago reflects their efficiency and not necessarily the cost of hiring workers", D.A. Davidson analyst Thomas Forte said.

As a result, several USA retailers, including Macy's Inc and Kohl's Corp, have been focusing on their online businesses and have ramped up hiring seasonal workers to man their distribution centres that support online operations. Some of these short-term jobs also get converted to full-time, regular positions, says Amazon.

Some of them have one-day hiring fairs coming up very soon for holiday positions.

Top U.S. department store chain Macy's Inc announced plans to hire 3,000 fewer workers this year, in part due to store closures, while Kohl's Corp said it would hire the same number of people it did as last year. The company is also hiring customer service representatives that can work from home.

The surge of temporary help will almost double the number of the workers it has at its fulfillment centers, sorting centers and customer service sites.

This forecast includes online shopping, which is expected to accelerate its pace of growth to 11-15 percent to about $140 billion.
