The North Carolina Department of Public Safety tweeted around 4 p.m. that the endeavored escape occurred at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City.

A fire was set in the prison sewing plant, and several employees are injured.

Northside Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School were all placed on lockdown around 3:45pm local time, according to the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools district (ESPPS). Fires extinguished. Situation under control.
