After a call of an officer's life "in danger" in New Orleans East, an NOPD officer has died in the line of duty.
The officer's name has not been released. "I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts".
One officer was struck and collapsed at the scene, while one or two officers returned fire, striking the suspect, according to Harrison.
Landrieu added, "These are the worst kind of days for the city".
New Orleans Police Chief Michael Harrison told reporters that gunshots were fired at four officers shortly after midnight local time (1 a.m. ET).

Tagbo: Davido breaks silence, releases statement, CCTV footage
Singer, Davido , has been re-invited by the Lagos State Police Command following the death of one of his friends, Umeike Tagbo. Tagbo's body was dumped in a Toyota Camry auto in front of the Lagos Island General Hospital by yet to be identified persons.
The officer was transported to University Medical Center, where he died.
Following the shooting, the 30-year-old suspect ran into a nearby apartment building.
There was a large police presence in an apartment complex near where the shooting happened. New Orleans SWAT surrounded the building and were able to get the suspect to peacefully surrender, Harrison said. The NOPD, Louisiana State Police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the scene.
Harrison and Landrieu both said they met with the family of the slain officer at the hospital early Friday.
