Tesla to recall 11000 Model X SUVs due to seat issue

Tesla is recalling 11000 SUVs because its seats could fail in a crash

Tesla Is Recalling 11000 Model X SUVs Due to a Seat Issue

This can prevent the left seat from locking in an upright position and allow the seat to slide forward during a crash.

The recall only covers vehicles with second-row fold-flat seats that were built between October 28, 2016 and August 16, 2017. That presents a safety issue, as the seat would fold forwards and provide zero protection during a crash.

Fixing the issue is as simple as adjusting the cables correctly, which requires no additional parts.

This is the second time Tesla has issued a recall for its Model X SUVs due to problems with the seats' latch. Customers with an affected auto can take it to a Tesla dealership for servicing, or contact one of Tesla's mobile fix units.

Although Tesla has not received reports of any issues or accidents relating to this condition, we will be inspecting the affected customers' cars so that we can confirm whether any adjustment is needed.

Tesla recalls tend to be voluntary, and its latest is no exception.

The Elon Musk-founded automaker says that the Model X problem is the result of cables within the seat that have not been properly tightened.

Internal testing revealed that cables in second-row fold-flat seats in 2016 and 2017 model year vehicles might need to be adjusted to "ensure the safety" of those riding inside, a Tesla spokesperson said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

The issue lies within the cables connected to that seat. Unlike the Model S and Model X, which are luxury cars made for profit margin not volume, Tesla is planning on churning out hundreds of thousands of Model 3s to work through its massive pre-order backlog.
