Red Wings, Andreas Athanasiou close to one-year deal

Report | Red Wings and Andreas Athanasiou agree to deal

Red Wings Sign Andreas Athanasiou

Athanasiou appears to be on the verge of signing a one-year contract extension with the Red Wings, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

DET and RFA forward Andreas Athanasiou have agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth $1.387M.

It was looking like Ken Holland and the 23-year-old were close to a deal this morning, and now they're finally there. The Red Wings, meanwhile, were holding firm on a one- or two-year deal carrying a $1.9 million AAV. The deal comes with a cap hit of $1.387 million after the Red Wings originally offered $1.25 million during the offseason and Athanasiou asked for $2.5 million from the team. There is a rumor that the Pittsburgh Penguins would be interested in trading for center Riley Sheahan, which would free up the necessary cap space for signing Athanasiou in Detroit.

In 2016-17, the London, Ontario-born Athanasiou scored 18 goals and 29 points in 64 games.

The franchise has nearly no space under the salary cap, and a roster move is likely to make way for Athanasiou.

According to MLive.com's Ansar Khan, along with the contract Athanasiou has been promised a minutes bump from the 13:27 he played last season, as well as regular time on both special teams units. Theoretically he could go on long-term injured reserve to clear room under the cap, but that would require him to miss ten games and his injury doesn't seem to be bad enough to necessitate that.
