Tipu Jayanti: 150 BJP workers detained in Hubli

The Karnataka government will observe the birth anniversary of 18th century Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan, on Friday amid protests by the right wing groups which see him as a "religious bigot".

Large-scale communal violence erupted during the Tipu Jayanti celebrations in 2015 when it was first organised by the state government.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner T Suneel Kumar said, "We are not giving permission to any procession, whether it is in favour of Tipu Jayanti or against it". BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said that the Congress-led government is anxious about Tipu Sultan instead of the state's public while the Siddaramaiah led Congress government has chose to continue with its plans to celebrate the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan.

City BJP President Dr. B.H. Manjunath, leader L. Nagendra, Samiti Convenors M.K. Prem Kumar and H.D. Griridhar, former State Women's Commission Chairperson Manjula Manasa and others were present. However, opposition BJP and some outfits are opposed to Tipu Jayanti celebrations.

Cops have been directed to identify and secure locations and use social media platforms and WhatsApp to connect with the residents.As per the new beat system, policemen will start visiting the sensitive areas from early morning. Prohibitory orders to be in place until Saturday 6 am.

Union minister Anantkumar Hegde wrote to the state government saying he should not be invited to the event because Tipu was a "brutal killer, wretched fanatic, and mass rapist".
