Massa also received a wonderful message from his son, Felipinho, after he crossed the finish line.

"I'm happy with P7 today, particularly because it was a hard qualifying", said Alonso.

"It's an issue I'm sure the government here are fighting, but I think maybe on this weekend, there are protocols that should be put in place to help, like for example when we go to Mexico, which weren't there for these guys".

Speaking later to Sky Sports, Massa said: "It's so hard to explain my feelings today".

"I had an fantastic start". I managed to overtake Alonso, which was very important for me as I knew he would have better pace than me. I knew that keeping him behind for 71 laps would be very hard, but I managed to do it.

Twelve months on from his tearful first farewell in the Interlagos pit lane, Massa will take part in what he says is his final Brazilian race this weekend (he was lured back from retirement to race one more year with Williams). It's so awesome to finish the race and see the emotion of the people after such an incredible race. I knew previous year I had so much love and emotion from the people but I didn't finish the race like I wanted.

Felipe Massa insisted on Thursday that his impending retirement from Formula One is for good, but he is dejected by Brazil's declining significance in the sport.

Having gone out on his own terms this year, Massa joked the second time around at Interlagos made his decision to come back for the 2017 campaign worth it. The thrill I felt today was huge, just like previous year.

His last race in F1 will be in two weeks in Abu Dhabi.

Williams have tested Poland's Robert Kubica and Britain's Paul di Resta, both older drivers seeking a comeback after years out, but also have 23-year-old German Pascal Wehrlein and Russian Daniil Kvyat on the list.
