British doctor 'punches shark' to escape Australia mauling

The novice surfer said he had learnt the tactic after watching interviews with Australian world champion surfer Mick Fanning, who punched a shark during a competition in South Africa in July 2015.

After only being in Australia for two months, the recovering doctor said he's not sure if he'll share the news back home. "Just punch it in the nose", Mr Fry told Australia's Nine Network TV. "I'm literally about to die, '" Fry said.

'I turned and I saw this shark come out of the water and breach its head.

"I was out surfing and I got this massive thud on my right-hand side; it completely blindsided me", Fry said.

He managed to fend the shark off with his left arm before scrambling back onto his board and bolt back into shore while also alerting his three friends.

He said he shouted out to his mates and then "paddled so hard back to shore".

But lifeguards spotted a great white shark and a bronze whaler in the area shortly after the horrific incident.

Fry was taken to Gosford Hospital with scratches and a puncture wound on his shoulder.

But now he is more anxious about what his mum would say about the injuries.

Following the attack, Avoca and North Avoca beaches were closed, and authorities began scouring waters for the shark involved the attack.

"North Avoca and Avoca beaches are now closed following a shark attack", the council said.
