Russian Federation never promised the United States that Iran and Iranian-backed forces would withdraw from Syria, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday, adding that their presence in the war-torn country is legitimate.
The presence of Iran in Syria is legitimate, Lavrov was quoted as saying by another agency, Interfax.
Officials from the US National Security Council have reportedly flown in for talks with Israeli security heads slated to begin Tuesday, primarily over the US-Russia agreement regarding Syria and Iran's growing threat to the region, US officials confirmed.
As an ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Moscow finds itself part of an alliance between Damascus and Tehran, the patron of Hezbollah.
"While the United States [with Russia] has made the South-West de-escalation zone a priority in its Syria policy, it has no realistic means of actually rolling back Iranian influence across the border", said Mr Schneider.
As the Russian-Iranian strategic partnership has deepened over the previous year, Lavrov has sought to play down the potential for a wider regional war arising from Tehran's role in Syria.
