Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo named National League Manager of the Year

The Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo and the Twins' Paul Molitor were awarded Baseball Writers Association of America's Manager of the Year award. It was considered a close competition going in, but Lovullo claimed 18 out of 30 first-place votes. In fact, he is now just the second person to make the Hall of Fame as a player and then go on to become a Manager of the Year. Arizona's skipper earned 18 first-place votes, while Roberts got five, with Bud Black of the Colorado Rockies and Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers each garnering three. Arizona jumped 24 wins, finishing 93-69 in 2017 after posting the exact opposite record, 69-93, the year before.

Among the other managers who received first-place votes was Dusty Baker of the Washington Nationals, who received one and finished fifth in the voting. Voting was completed before the playoffs began. Houston's A.J. Hinch received the only other first-place vote and finished third. Nobody expected a postseason berth for the Twins - perhaps not even their front office, because they were sellers at the trade deadline.

Roberts was the reigning National League Manager of the Year victor after winning the award in 2016, and was looking to become the first back-to-back victor since Bobby Cox with the Atlanta Braves in 2004-2005.

"It's humbling", Molitor told MLB Network. Last year, the Twins led the majors with 103 losses.

Cy Young Award winners will be announced Wednesday, followed by the MVP on Thursday. "An award like this reflects the work of the organization and everyone who contributed to the Twins having a turnaround season".
