Texas State University suspends Greek activities after student dies after frat event

In response to the death, Texas State University President Denise Trauth announced Tuesday afternoon she was suspending all greek fraternity and sorority chapters. Around the same time, Sigma Phi Epsilon adopted a substance free policy for all their fraternity facilities in the U.S.

Trauth said Ellis was a Phi Kappa Psi pledge and he attended an off-campus social event on Sunday.

The news comes at the end of a year that has seen two high-profile deaths of students at fraternities, raising doubts among students and educators about the value of Greek life on campus.

Florida State University took almost identical measures last week in suspending greek life.

A Texas State sophomore and Phi Psi brother was found dead after a pledging incident. "I think it's super risky and these things have happened before, so I think it's definitely the right and the smart move", said Texas State Senior Stephanie Cloyd. Penn State closed the fraternity following Piazza's death.

As a result of this tragedy, I have suspended activities of all Greek fraternity and sorority chapters at Texas State.

EMS and officers arrived and found 20-year-old Matt Ellis unresponsive.

The Texas State Police Department has offered to assist the San Marcos Police Department in the investigation into the events leading to Ellis' death.

If it is determined that Ellis' death is hazing related, charges could range from providing alcohol to a minor to manslaughter.
