Padmavati row: Haryana BJP leader threatens to torch movie theaters

The new release date of "Padmavati", which stars Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Paducone has not been announced yet.

The meeting came amidst a raging row over the content of the film.

Earlier this month, the group leaders said that the film's lead actress, Deepika Padukone, should have her nose cut for her involvement in the film. He further accused the film-maker of "habitually playing with public sentiments".

Tourism Minister Jaykumar Rawal, who is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding a ban on the Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie if it distorted historical facts.

The Uttar Pradesh government, too, has said it will not allow the movie's release until certain "controversial portions" are removed.

The chief minister asserted that if there has to be any action, then "it will be against both the sides". While MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has said the film won't be screened in his state, the Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje said on Monday that until suggestions given in her November 18 letter to Union I&B minister Smriti Irani are implemented, Padmavati will not be screened in Rajasthan.

"Giving statements inciting crime not only exposes the mindset of those issuing such threats, but is also a criminal offence", said Mr. Reddy, in a direction to the DG&IGP to provide security cover. I will never feel scared.

Deepika plays the role of a Rajput queen in the movie.

Padmavati has been in trouble since the beginning of the year, with fringe groups in the western state of Rajasthan attacking the film's set, threatening to burn down cinemas that show it and even physically attacking Bhansali.

The right wing Hindu group, which says it represents a large and influential caste group in India, has since vandalized movie theaters and launched protests in several states across the country, alleging the movie "distorts" history.
