It's been 50 years since children's programming language was launched and Google marked the day in its unique, inimitable style - the search engine giant introduced its first-ever coding doodle with "Coding for Carrots". It also includes a link to Teacher Resources in case you plan to teach code in the classroom. In the interactive Doodle, you program and help a furry friend across 6 levels in a quest to gather its favorite food by snapping together coding blocks based on the Scratch programming language for kids.

In the 1960's, long before personal computers, Seymour Papert and researchers at MIT developed Logo - the first coding language designed for kids.

Coding was added to the UK's National Curriculum in 2014 and we are increasingly seeing kids leave their parents speechless with the new words and skills that they are learning.

If you know kids having fun with today's Doodle, encourage them to also try the new CS First activity built on Scratch where they can create your own Google logo!

It essentially uses a small icon known as a "turtle" which can be moved around the floor using the basic Logo coding blocks - similarly to the furry rabbit in the Doodle. That programming language was called Logo.
