Netflix are going ahead with the final season of House of Cards

Now "House of Cards" will move ahead for the final season but there could still be more as a couple of spinoffs are currently in the works that may eventually get picked up at Netflix in the future.

Work on the sixth and last season is set to begin early in the year.

It is also reported that the House of Cards producers are contemplating killing off Spacey's character, the devious Frank Underwood and focusing on Robin Wright's character Claire Underwood in the season ending.

Netflix have announced that the final season of House of Cards will be just eight episodes and not feature the show's main protagonist, Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey.

Kevin Spacey made the set of Netflix's

Wright's character, Claire Underwood, finished season five by winning election as the first USA female president after wresting power from her husband. That year, House of Cards became the first online-only series to earn an Emmy nomination and the show has since won seven Emmys in total, with Spacey nominated five times (but never winning) for his portrayal of Underwood. Spacey was also accused of trying to seduce a teenager in 1986.

Netflix must be praised for its decision to fire Spacey without hesitation after the Hollywood veteran was caught up in a post-Weinstein storm of sexual assault allegations.

But the update will actually bring the series a little closer to its source material - Spacey's character dies in Michael Dobbs' book.

He said: "But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour".
