Fitbit's smartwatch finally gets its first update

Now, with the Ionic's first software update, many of those issues will be fixed. It released the gadget in October with only a few apps to its name - then proceeded to leave the brand new OS alone for nearly two months without a software update.

Fitbit debuted its first real smartwatch effort, the Fitbit Ionic, in October and, while we found it to be a pretty solid fitness watch in our review, some users were concerned with the limited choice of apps and clock faces included at the outset. The company noted in a blog post that 60 apps and 100 watch faces have been added or are coming soon to the Ionic ecosystem.

Note that all apps and clock faces in the Fitbit App Gallery are free to download, but some, like Pandora, require a paid subscription or one-time activation fee. Now Fitbit is updating the watch software with several dozen more apps, with new ones now available from well known companies such as Philips, Flipboard, and Yelp (yelp).

Partnership with Deezer, a personal streaming music service, to give Ionic users around the globe instant access to their favorite tunes right from their wrist (available in 2018).

Introduction of Fitbit Labs, an initiative led by Fitbit's Research and Development team that is focused on building unique apps and clock faces from the latest smart technologies and behavioral insights. Right now there are a handful of clock faces and apps available through Fitbit Labs, including a Fitbit Pet clock that helps you stay active by using your steps to feed and care for a virtual dog.

Support for multiple cards - You can now choose which card you want to use for Fitbit Pay directly on the Ionic; supported banks are up to 25 in 13 different markets. Throughout my time with the Fitbit Ionic, I've found Fitbit OS to be too laggy, nearly to the point where I don't want to wear the watch at all.

Jon Oakes, Fitbit's vice president of product, said the update was "just the start" of planned future enhancements. And after using this new software update on my Ionic for a few minutes, I'm happy to report that numerous lag issues are gone.
