It's only appropriate that the biggest city in the world's most populous country would open the planet's largest Starbucks.

CNN calls it a "caffeine-fueled Disneyland" and dubbed it the "first fully immersive coffee wonderland in China".

While it may not quite be the "magic carpet ride" one senior executive enthusiastically described it as, it's certainly not your neighborhood store either. "We wanted to take that customer experience even further".

As the sounds of Luciano Pavarotti's "Nessun Dorma" play in the background, the sheer scale of the place becomes apparent.

It's also hard to miss their ceiling - furnished with 10,000 handmade wooden hexagon-shaped titles, thoughtfully inspired by the locking of an espresso shot on a machine.

If you've ever wondered what "symphony pipes" are, then wonder no more. However, stores are beginning to see more customers adopt a USA consumer pattern of drinking coffee during the morning daypart. The company has already inked a deal for an enormous 43,000-square-foot Reserve Roastery in Chicago that's set to open in 2019.

Unlike many Starbucks sites, Shanghai's Reserve Roastery sells beer and wine, including a craft beer made from Kenya, Colombia and Guatemala coffees.

Along the way, customers collect virtual badges and once they've earned all of them, they'll receive a custom Roastery social media filter to share. In 2014, the company's flagship Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room opened in Seattle, and Starbucks said that it could open 20 to 30 Roastery stores worldwide. According to the release, a new store is opening every 15 hours in the country.

Starbucks Coffee Company has pulled out all the stops in Shanghai, opening the second location of its interactive, multi-sensory Starbucks Reserve Roastery format.
