One person was killed on Friday when a strong quake struck Indonesia's island of Java, said the US Geological Survey.

People ran into the street in panic in many areas and Indonesian television showed heavy traffic on roads as people fled coastal areas.

The disaster agency said the quake activated early tsunami warning systems in the south of Java, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami had been detected.

The one-minute quake could be strongly felt in the country's capital Jakarta more than 200 kilometers northwest of the epicenter.

The official said there were reports of more injuries in cities and villages close to Tasikmalaya, with tremors being felt across central and west Java.

In a statement, the Indonesian meteorological agency called on local authorities along the southern coast of Java to "stay alert" and "urge people to immediately evacuate".

The quake struck at 11.47pm (12.47am HKT) only about 350 kilometres southeast of Jakarta.

Homes were also reported damaged in the city of Tasikmalaya, some 50 kilometres from the epicentre.
