Rep. Kihuen announces he will not seek reelection

U.S. Rep. Ruben Kihuen, D-Nev., announced his decision to complete his term and not seek reelection despite allegations of sexual harassment by two women.

On Friday a second Democratic congressman, Bobby Scott of Virginia, was accused by former legislative aide Macherie Reese Everton of touching her leg and back without permission in 2013 and offering to advance her career in exchange for sex and said she was wrongfully dismissed from her job.

The news website BuzzFeed has reported allegations that Kihuen sexually harassed a staff member of his 2016 political campaign.

The statement also noted that "that the mere fact that it is investigating these allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee".

The Nevada representative has called the allegations against him "unsubstantiated hearsay and innuendo" in a statement released to the press.

The first-term Nevada Democrat, who is the subject of an ethics investigation in the House of Representatives, denied the allegations against him but concluded that the charges would distract from "a fair and thorough discussion of the issues" on the campaign trail. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, who heads the Democrats' campaign arm, have called on Kihuen to resign.

Texas Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold announced Thursday he would not seek re-election after he was accused of calling staffers "f--tards" and sexually demeaning them and their spouses.

Kihuen's announcement came a day after the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into whether Kihuen "may have engaged in sexual harassment" with a campaign aide and a lobbyist.

Two Democratic members of Congress have so far this year resigned or announced their intention to do so following accusations of sexual misconduct: Michigan Representative John Conyers and Minnesota Senator Al Franken. If true, Hoyer said Kihuen should resign.

Kihuen, once a rising star of the Democratic Party, allegedly texted her to ask, "What color are your panties?"

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has called for Kihuen's resignation, as has Rep.

"The support and encouragement of my constituents provides me with the strength and guidance to represent Nevada to the best of my abilities", he said.
