The Collier County Sheriff's Department says Andrew Meunier let his dog out at approximately 10 o'clock p.m. Wednesday

Andy Meunier was taking his dog outside one evening in Naples, Florida, when he turned to see a bear looking directly at him from an arms length away.

The bear was not a stranger to him.

The animal's strike caught the side of Meunier's face, leaving a long gash on his right side. He was treated at a hospital, where he underwent a four surgery where he received 41 stitches to close the deep wound.

Now a trap outside of Meunier's apartment hopes to lure in the bears with food. "I don't care if this scars, or anything, I walked away with my life, and it could've been a whole lot worse".

WINK reports this is the first bear attack in South Florida since 1970. "I tried to run and wasn't fast enough", Meunier said. "Any bear to me is big, but I have to say this one here is probably between 250 to 300 pounds, and like I said, she's had 3 cubs around with her", says Kirk Amerine. "I know it's hard because these trash cans don't have little locks or anything but maybe lock them up or we've been told to put ammonia on them", a spokesperson said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has set up bear traps near the complex in an effort to catch any bears who might wander in the area.

Local residents have reported seeing a "mama bear and three children" in the area in recent months and believe they have come into the town from a nearby nature reserve.

FWC biologists say there are approximately 4,050 black bears in Florida.
