Gillian Anderson has said she had made a decision to leave The X-Files after the first reboot series, but opted to stay on for a second outing because she was "curious".

"The X-Files" star Gillian Anderson said that she chose to leave the Fox series because there are a lot of things she wants to do in her life and in her acting career.

Gillian had admitted she was thinking about leaving after the show, and during a Television Critics Association (TCA) panel discussion on Wednesday, she declared she was done and ruled out any potential return in the future. A short season of six episodes brought the show back in 2016, and it returned again for another six episodes on January 3. "I think as [series creator] Chris [Carter] has said himself, that short stack of episodes felt like we were learning how to walk again and that this season of 10 [episodes] feels like the pace is up and we're running". Anderson said that the six-episode tenth season "would be it. Making the most of it and playing the wonderful characters again". "There's lots of things that I want to do in my life and in my career", Anderson says. Mulder, however, may continue in his search; Duchovny said he was "good either way" if the show continued or ended. Anderson's exit follows the departure of showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, who left the show six weeks ago due to creative differences with Fremantle Media regarding the second season. As for David Duchovny, who has played her partner Fox Mulder since the inception of the series, he seems to be on the fence on whether or not the show could survive without Anderson. The X-Files airs on Wednesdays on Fox at 8 PM Eastern.

The X-Files has had its ups and downs in quality over the years, from season to season, and even within the seasons, depending on the individual episode's focus. Duchovny, 57, joked. "I'm feeling pretty pissed off, now that I remember".
