"These local programs are providing vital services to some of our most vulnerable", HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in a conference call with reporters on Thursday. The money awarded to Colorado, part of $2 billion in Continuum of Care grants given out nationwide to combat homelessness, will be directed at organizations that provide housing and support services to individuals and families lacking a home.

The aggregate sum awarded to entities within California was $382,566,777 - the largest amount of any state.

On the other hand, the report said, veteran homelessness decreased 4.1 percent and chronic homelessness decreased by 35.9 percent.

HUD estimates there were 553,742 persons experiencing homelessness on a single night nationally in 2017, and increase of.7 percent since a year ago. These Continuums of Care will report these one-night "point-in-time counts" later in the year and will form the basis of HUD's 2018 national homeless estimate.
