NWS: Winter Storm Watch Thursday Evening, Freezing Rain Likely Overnight

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a regionwide winter storm watch, in effect Thursday evening.

Total snow accumulations of up to one-half inch, with ice accumulations up to a light glaze, are expected, the weather service said. The rain to ice change happens from 11 AM to 1 PM from Fayetteville and Huntsville to Decatur and Moulton, then from 1 PM to 3 PM over Sand Mountain around Scottsboro, Fort Payne, Guntersville, and Boaz.

And snow was being reported in the sharply colder air behind it.

As temperatures drop on Friday, rain will transition to a freezing rain/sleet/snow mix before changing to all snow later in the day.

Winter weather warnings and advisories were in place Friday all the way from northern MS to northern Maine.

The National Weather Service predicts that freezing temperatures will last through Sunday.

EAST AR: More sleet and ice than snow.

There's a 30 percent chance of snow before 7 p.m. with an overnight low around 9 degrees and wind-chill values as low as -5 degrees.

For Saturday, snow is likely through the early-morning hours with a chance of snow showers between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. with a high near 19. Again, that event could include heavy sleet, snow, ice, blowing snow or any combination of those factors. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible.

All of NE Washington is included in the Winter Storm Watch area.

The temperature was 29 degrees at 9 a.m.in Wyandotte County, and temperatures are expected to fall to around 18 degrees by 5 p.m. Temperatures are expected to remain freezing until Sunday across the region.

That wintry mess will then arrive in parts of the interior Northeast Friday night into Saturday.

Strong winds behind that crashing Arctic cold front have combined to produce whiteout conditions in some parts of the Plains.

Following the icy conditions overnight, snow will move in.
