Hawkins, 46-year-old Shanna Culver and her brother 45-year-old Curtis Culver, have all been arrested and are in the Shasta County jail on burglary and robbery charges related to the death of 20-year-old Frank Wesley McAlister in 1993 after Hawkins confessed to the crime, and named the Culvers as accomplices.

Hawkins said he hopes the community can forgive him.

However, in a dramatic unfolding of events decades later, Hawkins on Tuesday gave a statement to the police confessing to McAlister's murder.

During the interview, Hawkins also said he even reached out to McAlister's family previous year and that he wanted to confess to his crime in front of them.

'I know the wrong can't be changed but this is the closest I can come to doing the right thing'.

Investigators say the motive for the murder was robbery.

The three then left McCalister's body in the wooded area and dumped his vehicle at a local Costco, according to Hawkins.

They will appear in court next week to confirm their attorneys and on January 23 for a preliminary hearing. Because she was a minor at the time of the alleged crime, details about her case are private.

He was arrested on Tuesday following his confession, and the Culver siblings were arrested the next day.

He said that a year ago he reached out to McCalister's family.

McCalister's remains were discovered in 1994 by a hiker near Grace and Nora lakes in Shingletown, but his murder was never solved. Hawkins continued, saying that there hadn't been a moment where he hadn't been remorseful for what he had done. Before he made it, however, McAlister's dad died, he said.

"Brian Hawkins and Curtis Culver ultimately stabbed the victim to death and left his body in the woods. The trio then took his money and vehicle and drove back to Redding, abandoning the victim's vehicle".

During their interviews with police this week, Hawkins and the Culvers gave different accounts.

In 1993, McAlister had recently received money from a settlement.

Curtis Culver, on the other hand, told police that Hawkins did all the stabbing, the complaint says.

During his TV interview Tuesday, Hawkins, wearing a long-sleeve T-shirt and camouflage trousers and clasping a can of cola, declined to give details about the killing.

"What I believed happened was they said you say this we're going to let your sister go and he would do anything to save his sister", said Marcia Keel, the mother of Shanna and Curtis Culver.
