Citizenship and Immigration Services return to accepting DACA requests

US Judge Blocks Trump Move To End DACA Program For Immigrants

Donald Trump ran on a hardline immigration platform during the 2016 presidential elections

In deciding to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the Trump administration had called it an egregious example of executive overreach.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a statement on its website that DACA will be "operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded on September 5, 2017".

Word of the announcement quickly spread on social media, and some immigration lawyers posted alerts on their Facebook pages. Under Alsup's ruling, renewal applications must still be accepted, giving those approved another two years from the new date of their application approval.

Alsup ruled that the federal government must "maintain [DACA] on a nationwide basis" while legal challenges to ending the program proceed in court.

The announcement comes after a U.S. judge on Thursday temporarily blocked a decision by President Donald Trump to end DACA later this year.

The Department of Justice has indicated it will appeal the judge's decision, a move that could again put the program on hold.

In a statement issued Saturday, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said those previously granted deferred action under DACA may request renewal by filing the proper forms.

On Thursday, reports surfaced that Trump referred to Haiti and African nations as "s--hole countries" in a meeting that day with lawmakers.

Trump gave Congress six months to find a way to allow immigrant approved for the DACA program to remain in the US permanently. What will the end of the deferred action program mean?

"If you previously received DACA and your DACA expired on or after September 5, 2016, you may still file your DACA request as a renewal request", the agency said on its website.
