Kavaratti (Lakshwadeep), Bareilly, Moradabad and Sahranpur (Uttar Pradesh) are the nine cities that have made it to the list.

He averred that, with the selection of these nine cities, the total projected investment in 99 smart cities will be Rs 2,03,979 crore.

The areas that the studies will focus on include the magnitude of government services made available online, the number of citizens using these services, hotel occupancy in these cities, coverage of females in school education, the prevalence of water and vector-borne diseases, the extent of crimes, extent of public transport, levels of pollution, and availability of open space, among other things. The final list for SCM was announced on Friday. Center government was set to announce 10 names, but Shillong could not submit its proposal.

Puri added that ranking of cities on the basis of liveability index will promote competitive environment amongst cities, which will result in systematic improvements in quality of life.
