Lindsey Vonn Medal Count: How Many Has Skier Won?

Lindsey Vonn's on a mission in Pyeongchang as she prepares to ski in her first Olympic event Saturday in South Korea: win for grandpa.

Vonn loves to ski at ridiculous speeds, particularly in the downhill "because you go the fastest". She did it rehabilitation for nerve damage in her right arm, the grisly byproduct of shattering the humerus bone during a November 2016 training run.

With two-thirds of the 45-woman field still to race, Vonn ― the first skier out ― had slipped to joint-fifth position. She's a snowboarder first - she has won multiple World Championships in the parallel slalom events.

"Number one is always really hard, especially in super-G", Vonn told NBC's Heather Cox after the race. The Top 10 Super-G skiers in the World Cup rankers choose EVEN numbers 1-20.

At her home in Colorado, Lindsey Vonn sat down every day and did a chore that was painful and humbling for a grown woman.

The start of the race was delayed one hour due to strong winds.

"It's definitely shocking. In the Olympics a lot of weird things happen", she said.

Vonn still has a chance of winning an Olympic title at these Games, likely to be her last.

Vonn told the Today Show she believes her experience gives her an advantage over many of her competitors in South Korea.

"I want so badly to do well for him, and I miss him so much", Vonn said.

The Winter Olympics only come around every four years and during that time sports that most of the country usually doesn't pay attention to are suddenly front and center for a few weeks. She also made appearances in 2006, 2010 and her latest 2018 Winter Olympics appearance.

The combined event includes one downhill race and one slalom run, the times from those two races are then combined and the person with the fastest time is the victor. He's been such a big part of my life.

Vonn is expected to return to the snow Tuesday in the downhill.
