Strategy Analytics: Apple scores 51% of global smartphone revenue in Q4 2017

Apple iPhone X

Apple iPhone X was the best-selling premium smartphone in India in Q4

The Californian company made around $61bn (£43.4bn) in the final quarter of the year, the equivalent of 51 per cent of the industry's $120bn global revenue, according to analyst Strategy Analytics.

Of the $88.3bn Apple made in revenue between September and December a year ago, $61.5bn was generated by sales of the iPhone. Here's the SA table showing how the crumbs off Apple's table are distributed.

According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, total global smartphone wholesale revenues grew eight per cent annually to reach an all-time high of $120 billion during the fourth quarter of 2017.

Apple's iPhone cash cow is the gift that keeps giving. This is way higher than the global average of $300 for Q4 2017 - a massive 15% jump from $255 in Q4 2016.

While Samsung and Huawei manufacture a combination of high-end, mid and low-range models, Apple charges a premium on its handsets, with the average selling price of a single iPhone approaching $800.

Smartphone revenue Q4 2017
Apple's Q4 2017 iPhone revenue was three times higher than that

The iPhone-maker's impressive performance during the period was "helped by solid demand for its premium X model and Apple now accounts for more revenue than the rest of the entire global smartphone industry combined", Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley revealed in a separate report that Apple managed to grow its market share in China during the last quarter of 2017.

Both Apple and Samsung's smartphone wholesale average selling price (ASP) grew strongly, rising 21 per cent annually to $254 in the quarter. "If Huawei wants to grow its worldwide pricing and revenues even higher in the future, the company will need to grab additional marketshare in the high-value United States market".

Apple pips Samsung for top smartphone spot over holiday season (CNET) Sales of the iPhone X may have been slower than expected, but Apple still got the top position over Samsung in the last quarter of 2017. With carriers no longer offering friendly subsidies as in years past, the reality is that the iPhone X's $1,000 sticker price likely dissuaded otherwise interested iPhone owners from actually upgrading.

This accounts for more than the rest of the smartphone industry combined.
