In a blog post, OpenAI said the decision had been taken to avoid any conflict of interest as Mr Musk's electric auto company, Tesla, became "more focused on AI". However, Musk will reportedly continue to donate money and offer advice the organisation.

A prominent tech nonprofit called OpenAI announced that Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a co-founder and occasional A.I. fearmonger, is leaving its board. The same blog post announces a whole bunch of new donors from differing fields, including Valve's Gabe Newell, Skype founder Jaan Tallinn and Olympians Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton.

OpenAI has fast become a significant voice in the global machine learning community. Its areas of research are wide and include teaching computers to control robots with minimal instruction and the creation of AI agents to play the popular video game Dota.

As Tesla goes deeper down the rabbit hole of perfecting self-driving cars through AI, this paper all but sealed Musk's fate within OpenAI, sacrificing his position in the name of creating AI awareness. They also release source code for other people to use.

Rick Gates pleads guilty in Mueller probe
The federal investigation into their lobbying work began in September 2016, about a month after Manafort left Trump's campaign. The new indictment also removes Gates from the charges, and also removes several counts from the original October indictment.

How focused Tesla is on AI is open to debate.

Musk said in 2014 that AI is "potentially more unsafe than nukes", and when OpenAI was introduced in December 2015, Musk and other organizers played up the organization's intent to develop technology that could help people and focus on safety. But as cars move towards a driver-free future, there doesn't seem to be a way of avoiding it, which is likely why Musk and the rest of OpenAI came to this decision.

On Aug. 11, 2017, he tweeted that artificial intelligence poses a bigger threat to humanity than North Korea, even as the possibility of a nuclear missile attack escalated after President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un exchanged threatening words. The company has so far not managed to come close to delivering a level 5 self-driving system.
