Despite layoffs, Motorola's Moto Z line will continue

It said that the brand Moto would be now concentrating on the G, E, and Z smartphone ranges and that the X series, later on, might make a comeback. The company will also be scaling back on Moto mods, focusing on ones that "turn a profit" instead of the niche market it now caters. Reports about the layoffs emerged a few days ago after a Motorola employee said the company's workforce in Chicago has been halved. The Moto X5 was set to succeed the mid-range Moto X4 smartphone that came with a glass and metal design along with stock Android software and a solid performance.

The company today opened 25 "Moto Hubs" in Kolkata.

This weeks employment reductions are a continuation of that process. Motorola countered our reported with a very vague statement, saying the layoffs were less than half of the existing staff (AP confirmed it to be a total of 190 people) and that the Moto Z family would live on.

"We are not going for any fixed target (to reach 1,000 "Moto Hubs") but it can be as soon as in the next six months", Mathur, who is also the executive director for Lenovo India, told PTI.
