Microsoft is readying a major Spring update for its Xbox One console range

The next major update to the Xbox One operating system will bring support for AMD FreeSync, according to Microsoft.

FreeSync, like Nvidia's G-Sync, helps remove tearing or stuttering usually associated with gaming on monitors, as the technology syncs refresh rates to ensure games run smooth. There was a massive amount of news in this first installment, but two Xbox-specific update related items are worthy of highlighting.

Not only will the Xbox One support this, but it will be able to activate a TV's low latency mode only when a game is actually running. While the game console will soon be getting 1440p support with the spring update - now live for testers - also on the way are support for AMD Freesync-compatible monitors and the ability for TVs to automatically switch to low latency mode. Pairing this with the support for 1440p resolution means Xbox gamers will be able to take full advantage of their gaming monitor. Later this year, the Xbox One will also support an Auto Low Latency Mode which will switch supported TVs, including select Samsung models, to a low-latency mode while playing games.
