Ryan Coogler Pens Heartfelt Letter to Ava DuVernay

Black Panther is seeing its first competition at the box office since it opened with Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time and Coogler has written a tribute to the female director who he affectionately calls his big sister. She was a high powered Hollywood publicist with her own company before going on to write, produce and direct two films about the struggle of black women to find hope even after suffering loss.

"Ava DuVernay is someone who makes the impossible look easy", he wrote in an article for ESPN. By then she had written, produced and directed two incredible films, about black women finding hope while experiencing grief and loss, all while maintaining a production and distribution company to finance and distribute underserved independent films made by women and people of color.

Coogler also highlighted DuVernay's passion for equality and how she made sure that women directors and creatives were hired during the creation of her TV series, Queen Sugar and her searing Netflix documentary, 13th.

The 31-year-old added that the Selma director was "already one of (his) heroes" before they had ever met because he admired her 2010 and 2012 films I Will Follow and Middle of Nowhere.

A Wrinkle In Time is released in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2018.

Ava opened A Wrinkle in Time in the USA yesterday, and Ryan penned an "ode" to the director of the film starring Oprah Winfrey, calling her a "pioneer" for "inclusion, equity and representation".

Coogler described A Wrinkle In Time as "a film about a little black girl with glasses - like my mom, like my wife, like my big sister Ava - who refuses to accept that her dad is lost". According to Deadline, A Wrinkle in Time is projected to end Friday somewhere between $12 million and $14 million. I was reminded of this a couple of years back, when I got the heartbreaking news that she had lost her father.

As the 45-year-old opened her new movie A Wrinkle in Time in the USA on Friday (09Mar18), the Black Panther director penned a sweet letter describing the filmmaker as one of his heroes.
