The investigation linked three murders and two other deaths to the epidemic going as far back as the 1980s in a city of a mere 170,000 residents.

But the Mirror obtained the girl's diaries, where she talked about her two years of sexual abuse by an Asian grooming gang-since the age of 11.

The local council yesterday asked for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse to upgrade Telford to become a separate specific review alongside allegations involving establishment figures and the Church of England.

Paedophiles in central England abused up to 1,000 girls, some as young as 11, over a four-decade period, the Sunday Mirror newspaper reported.

The house fire was started by Lucy's 26-year-old taxi driver boyfriend, Azhar Ali Mehmood, who was later jailed for life for the murders - but was never arrested or charged over sex abuse.

A 40-year-old pedophile ring has been exposed following a probe into child abuse in the sleepy British town of Telford.

Out of 12 - mostly unconnected - victims who spoke to investigators from the Mirror, more than 70 abusers were accused.

Years later, a police investigation identified more than 100 potential victims, who were abused between 2007 and 2009, in an investigation called 'Operation Chalice.' Police said there could be as many as 200 perpetrators.

In 2002 another schoolgirl - Becky Watson, 13 - was killed in an unexplained vehicle accident in the Shropshire town. At the time, it was described as a prank gone wrong.

In 2000, 16-year-old Lucy Lowe was murdered along with her mother and 17-year-old sister.

"Girls like Becky were treated like criminals", said her mother Torron Watson.

He added: "It is really important to me that anyone who feels they are a victim of such crimes, or that they know someone who is, can come forward - knowing they will be taken seriously and will be looked after, and that we will go wherever the evidence takes us to investigate these crimes". She had been made pregnant by him at just the age of 14.

Telford lawmaker Lucy Allan said the newspaper's findings were "extremely serious and shocking" and demanded a public inquiry.

Becky had a friend who was abused by the same gang. Previous year the Home Office spent time visiting the area and personally paid thanks to the commitment of our staff working to protect young people at risk from sexual exploitation.
