Despite reports he disappeared right after he was passed over for a promotion, Dr. Schuchat said he'd been given an "early" promotion to the rank of commander, effective July 1 of past year, for his "exemplary performance".
Michael O'Connor, who said that Cunningham left the CDC headquarters in Atlanta on February 12, after supposedly discussing with his supervisor the reasons why he was passed up for a promotion. As many of his colleagues in the USPHS have pointed out, this information is incorrect.
Schuchat explained that Cunningham was actually promoted to commander effective on July 1 "in recognition of his exemplary performance in the US Public Health Service", which is a uniformed corps in the Department of Health and Human Services.
The CDC says it's working with Cunningham's family and urges anyone with information to call police.
But exactly one month after Timothy Cunningham vanished, abandoning everything he would need to survive and leaving no clues about his whereabouts, the CDC issued an unusual rebuke of that police finding.

"He told my husband to tell his wife-me -to erase his cellphone number from my cell phone", Viviana Tory told CBS.
Today marks one month since Commander (CDR) Timothy Cunningham was last seen, and we have not given up hope that he will soon be found. Cunningham's parents reported him missing February 16 after going to his home and finding his belongings and vehicle there.
In the statement released Monday, the CDC said Cunningham's July promotion "reflects his excellence as an officer and an employee".
