More bad Celtics' injury news, Marcus Smart reportedly has torn thumb ligament

With the injury to Smart, the Celtics bench, which has been great lately when healthy, will be missing two of its key contributors. Daniel Theis is out for the rest of the season after tearing his meniscus.

Originally the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Marcus Smart is heading into restricted free agency for the first time in his young career.

Charania reports Smart will seek second opinions on his injury, so his timeline for recovery is undetermined.

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart is expected to miss some time with a sprained right thumb but the team does not yet know the severity of the issue.

To be more accurate, the injury occurred when Smart went for a diving steal in what was ultimately a 99-97 Boston lost to Indiana Sunday. Smart is averaging 10.2 points per game for the Celtics, and he is their best on-ball perimeter defender.

Smart has struggled to score efficiently at the National Basketball Association level, shooting 36.0 percent from the field and 29.3 percent from three-point range since the Celtics selected him with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 National Basketball Association draft. It's now second in the Eastern Conference standings, 3 1/2 games behind the Raptors.
