According to the ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey Q2 2018, South African employers report encouraging signs for job seekers in quarter two of 2018.

According to ManpowerGroup, the local financial, insurance and real estate sector recorded the highest net hiring outlook of 32 percent for the first quarter of next year among the seven major sectors, unchanged from a quarter earlier but down 1 percentage points over the same period of last year.

ManpowerGroup Australia & New Zealand managing director Richard Fischer believes the national NEO of +10% is clear evidence of a strong labour market while noting that there are distinct differences across the country.

"While the country still faces challenges in terms of repairing years of economic sluggishness, promises of policy certainty and consistency seem to have had a further positive effect on confidence and the strength of the economy thus far". The weakest outlooks are reported in Mining (+15%), Government Information (+14%) and Nondurable Goods Manufacturing (+12%). Hiring intentions improve in five of the 10 industry sectors when compared with the previous quarter.

"Most notable is the easing employment outlook for the Mining & Construction sector and the Manufacturing sector, while hiring intentions have picked up in the formerly subdued Wholesale & Retail Trade sector". Similarly, employers in the Services sector report a decline of three percentage points compared to the same period in 2017.

The survey of over 1,900 employers across Canada reveals that 20 per cent plan to increase their staffing levels in the second quarter of 2018, while three per cent anticipate cutbacks.

The Manpower Group Press release states that " Of Over 59,000 employers surveyed across 44 countries and territories, confidence levels have strengthened year-on-year in 25 countries, weakened in 13, and remained the same in five".

However, these improved outlooks have been offset by a softening in hiring expectations across a number of other key sectors. Elsewhere, medium employers report steady hiring prospects with an outlook of +11%, while outlooks stand at +5% and +3% for small- and micro-size employers, respectively.

Manpower is out with its employment outlook survey today (Tuesday) on hiring intentions for April through June.

The strong national result is unchanged when compared to the same period past year, but declines by three percentage points quarter-on-quarter.

With seasonal variations removed from the data, the survey predicts a 14 per cent increase in hiring; a 2 per cent increase compared to the previous quarter, and an increase of 7 per cent from this time past year.
